Q&A: every time I do crunches I hurt my neck, Is there any way to eliminate this problem?

Hello readers, its been a while since I last “blogged”, its because I have been quite busy this period, I’m working on the MPN contest, a new website and some career opportunities. Don’t worry I will let you in on the gist when these opportunities mature. Back to business I came across this Q&A on a facebook fan page a while ago and I just decided to post it here because I think it gives a solution to a problem a lot of people have when doing crunches and sit-ups. Enjoy…..

Coach Eric Broser’s Q & A:

Q. I like to do crunches for my abs, but every time I do them I hurt my neck! Is there any way to eliminate this problem?

A. This is a common complaint amongst trainees. In fact, in my many years as a personal trainer I have heard this dozens of times. There are a few things you can do to make your neck more comfortable while performing crunches. I know this might sound strange, but the first thing you may want to try is a little trick I learned through studying the work of Paul Chek (expert in the fields of corrective and high-performance exercise kinesiology): Place your tongue on the roof of your mouth while crunching, as this is actually the anatomical resting position of the tongue. By doing this, you will more effectively recruit the muscles near the surface of the neck that best support your head. When your tongue is in any other position, the much weaker muscles near the cervical vertebrae are forced to provide much of the support, and these muscles are easily strained and/or injured when overtaxed. Another thing you might try is resting your head on the floor briefly between reps. This will lessen the stress on your neck by allowing the neck muscles to relax momentarily. Just don’t rest too long or you will compromise the training effect on your abs. Finally, do not interlock your fingers and place them behind your head during crunching movements. This is probably the number one reason for neck strain occurring during abdominal work, for as you start to fatigue, you will most likely begin to initiate each repetition by pulling on your neck/head in order to perform more reps. This can overstretch connective tissue and injure the delicate neck muscles. It is far better to simply place your fingers by your temples on the sides of your head, or to cross your arms over your chest. I hope this advice makes your ab training a bit less of a “pain in the neck!”

EVENT: MR IDEAL NIGERIA 2012; who will win the Mr Body Perfect 2012 award? Brace yourselves as you feed your eyes with the pictures of 37 of Nigeria’s sexiest men.

I consider it an honor to blog about this pageant because of what the pageant stands for and what it has achieved in such a short time. Though the article is coming rather late, considering the fact that the grand finale is coming up on Saturday, I just feel I have to write something about this pageant because to me there is no other pageant more worthy to be written about than this pageant, at this time. I can say a lot about this pageant considering the fact that it is a very popular pageant and I (kaycee) won its fitness award last year. The pageant has produced four CEOs in two years and is hoping to produce more this year. To learn more about the pageant visit; http://www.mridealnigeria.com

As a fitness blogger my main focus is on one thing and one thing alone; the fitness award (Mr Body Perfect). The fitness award (Mr Body Perfect), aside from the overall award (Mr Ideal Nigeria), is regarded as the most sorted for and most valued award. The reason for this is that, past winners of this award have been regarded as fitness icons in Nigeria and the pageant has done a lot in helping them get to their present status.

To win the award you are required to have a well-rounded physique and muscle definition. A professional bodybuilder probably won’t win the award because they tend to be too big and scary. A sexy and well-built body (from head to toe) is what the pageant is looking out for when it comes to who wins this award. After all said and done the question on my mind and the minds of most fans of the pageant is; who is going to be ‘MR BODY PERFECT 2012? Well keep your fingers crossed as we peruse the pictures of the sexiest men in Nigeria. Here are your contestants, (hover your cursor over the pictures to see which states they represent) enjoy….There you have it! your 37 contestants. Before y’all start leaving your comments on who y’all think should be the winner of this prestigious award (Mr Body Perfect 2012), let me give you a list of five people I think are eligible to win the award. In no particular other, they are representatives of;

*EBONYI
*ABUJA
*DELTA
*BENUE
*ADAMAWA

Look out for these guys. If at the grand finale they look the same way or even better than they look in the pictures above, then one of them is going to be decorated with the MR BODY PERFECT 2012 sash on Saturday. Watch out!!!

Please leave your predictions and comments in the comment area below…..

Don’t forget to come support your favorite contestants at the MR IDEAL NIGERIA grand finale on this saturday the 9th of June

Venue; SPICERY HO TEL, Oniru estate, lekki lagos.
Time; 5PM.

Let the predictions begin……

Sexual benefits of regular exercise – find out how exercise can increase your libido and give you a more gratifying sex life.

Sex and exercise kind of go hand in hand in that more sex increases your gains at the gym while more exercise increases your productivity in bed. This article is just a ‘part 1’ of a 2 part series in which you will learn most of the sexual benefits of regular exercise. In this article (part 1) I will be highlighting some of the benefits.

In my course of business, as a fitness trainer, there is one particular question, among others, that has been thrown at me several times; are muscular guys good in bed? At first I found it difficult to answer this question because I felt awkward that somebody would ask me this question knowing that I’m a muscular guy. And the fact is that about 95% of the people that ask me this question are ladies. At first I got thinking, “do these ladies want to have sex with me or what?” then later I had a rethink; they are probably asking this question because they want to know whether the strength of a man is directly proportional to his performance in bed. Well with what I know now and researches that other exercise scientists have carried out in the past, I will say a big “YES!”. But I will also tell you that the fact that a man looks big doesn’t actually mean he is strong or he even exercises at all.

Now strength is not the only benefit of exercise neither is it the only factor that increases a man or woman’s productivity in bed. Strength is only one of the benefits of regular exercise, in relation to your sex life and in general. The following are a few highlighted sexual benefits of regular exercise:

Exercise Promotes The Release Of Endorphins.
when you talk about obstacle to having great sex, stress and fatigue are mentioned more often than not. Endorphins are released in the brain to combat a ‘stress hormone’ called cortisol, and the feeling of pressure. Endorphins are released when anyone exercises or has sex. The more frequent and intense the release of the endorphins, the easier it is for sexual arousal and pleasure.

Exercise Increases Muscular Strength, Muscular Endurance and cardiovascular Endurance.
muscular strength plays a vital role in having an awesome sex life. Muscular strength makes it easier for you to sustain a wide variety of sexual positions that require great physical control, which makes your sex life more eventful and less monotonous. Cardiovascular endurance makes you last longer during sex – “Please tell me who won’t want that?”. Muscular endurance prevents you from having muscle cramps or injuries during sex – no body wants to have a leg cramp when “getting it on”. Lol.

Exercise Makes You Feel Sexy And Desirable.
Research has shown that exercising regularly and having a fit body improves your body image (feeling of “I’m sexy and I know it”) and makes you comfortable in your own body. This promotes libido (I have been experiencing this ever since I got into shape), relaxes you and increases your over all confidence and performance during sex.

We have come to the end of the ‘part 1’ of this series. In the ‘part 2’ I would be telling you other sexual benefits of exercise and the exercises to do to take advantage of all the sexual benefits of regular exercise. Till then, stay fit…………..

Please note that these sexual benefits of regular exercise, apply to both sexes.

how to burn fat permanently; burn the recommended 2pounds(lb) per week.

This is one of the first topics I discuss with my clients before they set their goals and commence training. Reason being that without having this discussion most clients set goals that are unrealistic and in the long run would lead to only temporary weightloss.

In order to burn fat almost permanently, researchers and very experienced trainers advise that we set our weightloss goal to around 2lb per week. They further stress that any weightloss that is more than 2Ib, there about, will in most cases lead to temporary weightloss. now over the course of training myself and others I have tried to understand why this is so and I have discovered 2 reasons why this may be so;

#1. WE RUN THE RISK OF LOSING LEAN MUSCLE MASS
Energy is stored in the body as fat and glycogen. When carbohydrate is taken into the body and broken down it turns to glucose, which gets used by the body at that time or stored as fat or glycogen. Glycogen is stored in the muscle (the bigger the muscle the more its glycogen storage capacity). Our body expends energy at every time ‘t’ meaning that at everytime of the day, even when at rest our body uses up energy. Now that energy is either gotten from the stored fat or glycogen. To burn fat permanently we should aim to reduce the amount of stored glycogen being used as energy and increase the amount of stored fat used as energy. When we burn more than 2Ib in a week we tend to make use of more glycogen which causes a reduction in muscle size. Reduction in muscle size also means a reduction in body metabolism and a reduction in body metabolism leads to a reduction in the amount of calories burnt at rest which invariably means less fat would be burnt at rest due to the reduction in body metabolism.

Our body metabolism plays a major role in making sure we keep fat off permanently. So since burning more than 2Ib per week might risk reduction in body metabolism at rest, we are advised to stick to the 2Ib per week recommendation if our goal is to keep the fat off permanently.

#2. WE MIGHT NOT BE ABLE TO KEEP UP WITH THE INTENSE TRAINING, DIET OR SUPPLEMENT PLAN.
To lose more than 2Ib a week most of us have to go to far reaching lengths like tying your lower and upper jaw together, spending long hours in the gym everyday or taking supplements that can not be used for a prolonged period of time because of side effects. I have seen cases like these several times. After doing these things for a while the people actually lose weight massively but once they stop whatever it is they are doing they add back the fat faster than before.

There was a recent case like that in the last gym I worked with. The lady in question had used one of these Chinese supplements a while ago and she lost so much weight but after about three months she was told that she had to stop taking it for a while because of the side effects it may cause due to prolonged usage. She stopped it and in a very short time of not using it she became fatter than she ever was ( it was at that point she came to the gym). Except whatever you are doing to lose more than 2Ib per week also helps you build lean muscle mass and is something you can keep doing all through your life, please desist from doing it or you may never keep that fat off permanently.

So as we can see from the two points sited above, to burn fat permanently we need to keep our weightloss goal, around 2pounds(Ib) per week.

you are advised to see a doctor before you make any significant changes to your diet and workout.
